The new astragal is an extruded aluminum unit to replace the split wooden astragal. Installation was easy, requiring only a cordless drill/driver.

Patio French Door Astragal Replacement – Part 1

This project explains how to replace the t-astragal (or simply astragal) on a pair of exterior doors. An astragal is the moulding attached to the inactive door, that contains the slide bolts, strike plate and weatherstrip to seal between the doors. The new t-astragal is highlighted in this photo.

Having cut the mortises for the new Hager BB1279 ball bearing door hinges, I’m ready to attach the new hinges to the door. A long aluminum channel that doubles as a rip fence to cut plywood with my circular saw is used to align the hinges.
