Okna vinyl replacement sliding window review – price, features, installation and maintenance. The 20 year old leaded glass picture in the master bath has several drawbacks:

Master Bath Leaded Glass Picture Window
Master Bath Leaded Glass Picture Window
  • The lead cames are in direct contact with the outdoors. Lead is an excellent heat conductor, transferring the summer heat indoors and losing heat in the winter. This causes the master bath to be much warmer or colder than the rest of the house.
  • Art glass is single pane with minimal insulating properties including U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).
  • Single pane glass does little to block noise such as street traffic and lawn equipment.
  • Picture windows cannot be opened when the weather is nice. The bathroom has two exhaust fans but it’s not the same as letting in a nice breeze.

I decided to replace the leaded glass window with an Okna vinyl replacement sliding window along with several other wood frame windows that needed replacing. It’s a major improvement brightening the bathroom and opens up the view. The new window insulates well and the bathroom temperature now tracks the thermostat setting instead of the weather.

The Vinyl Replacement Windows Cost & Advice article explains why I chose the Okna Enviro-Star 800 series premium vinyl windows sold by Pinnacle Window & Siding of Woodstock, GA. The window price was about $1,600 furnished and installed.

Okna Vinyl Replacement Sliding Window Review

My preferences for the master bath window are a casement or a horizontal sliding sash window. I was limited to a sliding window because my window is too large for a casement due to the weight of the sashes. Textured semi-privacy glass is available but I prefer the clear glass.

Windows are custom made at the factory after the order is submitted. Lead time from order to dealer delivery is typically 4 to 6 weeks. Six new windows are unloaded from the trunk and sat in the driveway. The new sliding window is on the right:

Remove the Old Leaded Glass Picture Window

It takes about an hour to replace the master bath window. Old window removal and mounting the new vinyl window takes about 15 minutes. Trim work is the majority of the work to wrap the window in aluminum cladding and seal the seams with caulk, which requires training and skill.

Remove the old picture window by:

  • Cut the caulk seam along the inside stops.
  • Drive a putty knife between the frame and inside stop to separate embedded caulk seams.
  • Chisel nose off the exterior blind stop and pry off the filler strip.
  • Push the window out.

The Pinnacle Window & Siding team removed the somewhat flimsy leaded glass window out without breaking it. I’ll keep it for decoration inside house.

The new window is set in the rough opening against the inside stops. It’s leveled, shimmed and fastened with stainless steel screws set in factory made holes in the frame. Plastic caps cover the screw holes. The window has tempered glass as required by the Building Code because it’s above a bathtub:

The window has two insulating foam bands that wrap the top and sides. Fiberglass insulation fills the gap between window frame and sill. A unique feature on sliding windows are weep holes. These are necessary to drain rain water that collects in the bottom of the frame:

Vinyl Window Aluminum Trim Cladding

PVC coated aluminum trim covers the gap between the window frame and brickmould. This is called “wrapping”, “capping” or “cladding” a window. It’s a durable, paintable and low maintenance solution. Trim coil is formed with a sheet metal brake, Tapco Brake Buddy and tin snips to fit like a glove:

Cladding is installed on the window sill first. Notice the PVC coating has a wood like texture:

The cladding for the left and right sides is made and installed after the sill piece such that rain always sheds like shingles on a roof. The Tapco Brake Buddy is a roller tool that forms the small rib or joggle to match the brickmould profile:

Trim the cladding with tin snips, check the fit. Apply adhesive caulk to the back of the trim and press into place. The aluminum trim fits into the vinyl window accessory groove and wraps over the wood brickmould. Note the single nail set into the “ear” of side trim piece (middle photo). The top trim piece goes under the metal drip cap flashing:

Apply Siroflex HYBRI-SIL® adhesive caulk and sealant to the back of the trim and press into place. The bottom edge fits in the window accessory groove. Caulk all seams and joints for a weatherproof seal. Pinnacle Windows & Siding is very particular about quality and won’t use caulks sold at the home improvement store:

The sashes have two locks (top and bottom) with a smooth positive action:

The unlocked sashes slide past each other the full width of the window:

The sashes are removable by unlocking the two latches, then lifting the sash up and out of the track. Each sash has two sets of brass rollers (four rollers per sash) which glide smoothly on the plastic track. The vinyl tracks are removable by inserting a paper clip or similar hook under the end and pulling up. This is by design for cleaning the tracks and weep holes as needed:

Clean clogged weep holes with a pipe cleaner or small brush. Do not use pressure washers, bleach, abrasives or grease removers. Zep Vinyl Window Cleaner is a good choice.

Okna Enviro-Star 800 Window Performance

The Okna vinyl window is impressive for the following reasons:

  • It looks great!
  • High quality build, fit and finish.
  • Aluminum trim clad looks like wood and protects the wood brickmould.
  • Significantly reduces outside noise.
  • Reduced heat and insulates well.
Sunlight shining through the old leaded glass window felt very warm on my hand, but it’s only slightly warm with the Okna Low-E glass that blocks most of the infrared rays.

Pinnacle Window & Siding of Woodstock, GA did a fine job! [Full disclosure: I signed the contract first, then asked if they’d mind if I wrote about the project. I received no discounts, special consideration or other compensation.]

Best,
Bob Jackson
