This project is continued from Hail Damaged Roof Replacement: Part 4 – Gas Flue Vents.

The shingle roof is being replaced due to hail damage. Ice and water shield is applied over the plumbing vent pipes, new vent boots are installed, then protected from the weather with Dura-Boot vent boots.

Roof Plumbing Vent Boot Installation

After the roofing felt is laid, an oversize sheet of GAF StormGuard® leak barrier (peel & stick ice water shield) is fitted over the roof plumbing vent pipe. The rubberized ice and water shield is self-sealing around nails for extra leak protection. GAF StormGuard is very tough stuff!

A standard vent boot is installed as the courses of shingles are laid at the 2 inch plumbing vent at the lower left of the photo. A sheet of GAF StormGuard is ready to be installed over the 3 inch plumbing vent pipe to the right of the photo:

Notice how the GAF StormGuard leak barrier (ice and water shield) overlaps the lower course of shingles to shed water. The new vent boot at the lower left of the photo will be installed as the shingles are laid.

Perma-Boot Plumbing Vent Boot Leak Protection

The roofing contractor would normally have installed a rain collar over the standard vent boot for long term leak prevention. While discussing how the plumbing roof vent pipes would be installed, the roofer suggested lead vent flashings however, I have lot’s of squirrels and was concerned the squirrels would chew on the soft lead. The roofer then recommended Perma-Boot as a good product to protect the standard vent boots for the long term (why wait for a leak to develop?). The roofer said he would install the Perma-Boots if I purchased the items. I readily agreed. You can get them here.

The 3 inch and 2 inch Perma-Boots are two piece units that are very simple to install in minutes using only caulk. The hinged top automatically adjusts to the roof pitch.

Perma-Boots also make great Steampunk helmets!

Perma-Boot completely covers the standard vent boot:
